Introduction to the course

Qualitative Research Explained
Qualitative Research Explained describes the characteristic features Qualitative Research methods — which are interpretive and contextual. Qualitative research aims to study things in their natural setting to make sense of a phenomenon in terms of meanings people bring to them. Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey discusses the five different approaches: Narrative research, Phenomenology research, Grounded theory research, Ethnographic research and Action Research

What is Research Methodology
Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey demystifies the concepts of Ontology, Epistemology and Paradigm in this lecture. There are three main research paradigms used to guide research methods and analysis: positivism, interpretivism and critical theory. Dr. Pandey discusses these paradigms, their origins and principles, which is important to decide which is appropriate for a particular study.

Demystifying Epistemology
Demystifying Epistemology: How do we know what we know' discusses Epistemology as the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature, sources, and limits of knowledge. In this video, Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey explores some key concepts and examples that will help you better understand this fascinating area of study.

Grounded Theory Explained
Grounded Theory Explained: Mastering Qualitative Research describes the different steps for conducting Grounded Theory Research. Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey discusses the important guidelines and best practices of autoethnography. He describes the process of coding, memo-writing and theoretical sampling

Coding in Content Analysis
Coding in Content Analysis: A step-by-step Guide demonstrates the coding process in Qualitative Data Analysis Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey discusses the different stages of coding and also demonstrates a sample codebook.

Thematic Analysis
How to Do Thematic Analysis demonstrates with the examples, the elements of doing a Qualitative Thematic Analysis Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey discusses the six phase guideline suggested by Braun and Clark for conducting a qualitative analysis.

Content Analysis
In this web lecture Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey explains about Qualitative and Quantitative Content Analysis. The process of creating condensed meaning units, codes, categories and themes is described here. Examples of good content analysis research are also demonstrated in this lecture.

Discourse Analysis
Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey presents on Discourse Studies and ways to analyze Discourses. Discourse analysis focuses on the use of language in social context. Language refers to either text or talk, and context refers to the social situation or forum in which the text or talk occurs. Discourse analysis from a Foucauldian perspective and a critical perspective is discussed here. Steps involved in performing a Discourse Analysis is also discussed.

Case Study
Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey presents on different types of case studies and the steps involved in conducting a Case Study Research. A case study is an empirical method that investigates a contemporary phenomenon (the ‘case’) in depth and within its real-world context, especially when the boundaries between phenomenon and context may not be clearly evident. It could be an intrinsic case study involving just study one case as an exemplar or could be an instrumental case study using multiple cases.

Ethnography
Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey presents on the Ethnographic Research Method in this video. Ethnographic research is a qualitative method where researchers observe and study a culture-sharing group in their real-life environment. Ethnography was is generally used in anthropology, but is used across a wide range of social sciences including media and communication studies.

Narrative Analysis
How to do Narrative Analysis: A step-by-step Guide demonstrates Narrative analysis as a qualitative research method that involves the gathering of stories – participants’ detailed accounts of their experience. These stories then become the data for the researcher to analyze and interpret to gain a deeper understanding of a particular phenomenon or context. Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey discusses the types and characteristics of Narrative Analysis with an example

Phenomenological Research
What is Phenomenological Research demonstrates Phenomenological research as a qualitative research method that aims to describe, interpret, and understand the meaning of experiences about a certain phenomenon from the perspective of those who have experienced it Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey also discusses Bracketing: Setting aside your own experiences, assumptions and beliefs about the phenomenon and Horizontalization: Treating every statement from your participants as having equal value

Book Reviews
Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey discusses on How to Write Academic Book Reviews in this recorded lecture. Readers need to be informed of new, innovative, and ground-breaking books while being warned of books of poor quality and those that may not relate to their area of interest. A book review is an evaluative critique. Readers are interested in the book reviewer’s opinions. It is not a mere summary or a description of the book being reviewed.
